WRITING COACH
Creator of "Marketing Your Words of Art" workshop series designed to
help other writers cope with the ups and downs of freelancing. Topics
covered included: goal-setting, bulldozing writer's block, preparing
convincing queries and book proposals, keeping rejections in
perspective, understanding copyrights and negotiating fees. Those who
have offered this course include: The Knowledge Network in Albany and
the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Continuing Education Department. Worked
with mature students at Sheridan College's Brampton Campus to create
and publish The Sheridan Sapient and served for several years on the
college's Journalism Advisory Committee in Oakville.
AWARD-WINNING PORTFOLIO
Efforts recognized and rewarded in Canadian competitions for Best
Feature, Best News Editorial, and Best Tabloid Front Page Design as
well as a premier national award for Best Series of Articles. Several
human interest stories were deemed worthy of syndication by Canadian
Press Wire Services. Honors bestowed during years at Sheridan College
of Applied Arts and Technology included the Board of Governors' Silver
Medal for Academic Excellence and two Thomson Newspaper Awards.
PROVEN PUBLIC RELATIONS EXPERTISE
Producer of ads, annual reports, brochures, flyers, media releases,
newsletters and workshops. Developed and taught a public relations
course called "Put On A Public Face" for Brampton campus of Ontario's
Sheridan College. Hosted series of cable television talk shows
involving child welfare issues on behalf of Halton Children's Aid
Society, a branch of the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social
Services. Completed several projects for the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food in Guelph, Ontario. These included creating
promotional material for province's Agriculture In The Classroom
program; co-editing a teachers' guide for a science unit on Energy and
Food; editing and designing annual reports; researching and writing a
career-planning booklet and leaders' guide for senior 4-H members as
well as conducting workshops for government staff throughout the
Province of Ontario.
